Chapter 5
Shadows

In the short time it took for Mollye to lock the house and get out to her car, a small, blue Honda, Jared had already taken his place in the driver’s seat.  The air was moist still from the passed storm and clouds blocked stars and moon, making the night deeper than Mollye felt comfortable with.  Being able to see the stars always gave her a sense of security, a small assurance that someone was watching over her.  A shiver crept up her spine as she stood in the headlights of her car looking up to the sky.  Why does he want to drive?  She thought.  He doesn’t know where James goes, and he’s been gone so long he probably doesn’t even know the layout of the town anymore.  The mist in the air reflected the headlights, and because of this, Mollye was unable to make out the car through the haze.  She headed toward the passenger side of the car and got in, buckling her seatbelt and sitting quietly while Jared pulled out of the driveway.

She gave him occasional directions while he drove, then stared out the window looking for James’ car.  She found herself uncomfortable in Jared’s silence, and tried to fathom what he was thinking about.

Jared rose to his feet and paused a moment.  He did not feel dizzy this time, but Mollye was staring at him.  “I’m fine,” he repeated, using the same shortness in his tone that he used before.  He found himself feeling slightly bad about his tone as he realized that she was simply concerned for his well-being.  Instead of apologizing, though, he simply headed for the door, retrieving her keys from the floor where she dropped them on the way.  He moved in a preprogrammed manner, heading for the driver’s seat of Mollye’s car.  He sat down, started the car, and waited impatiently for Mollye to join him.  After a moment she finally emerged from the house.  She stood staring blankly upward at the starless night for a moment before finally moving toward the passenger side door.  Jared breathed a sigh of relief that she did not try to evict him from the driver’s position, and once she secured her seat belt, he pulled out of the driveway.

They both sat predominantly in silence while Jared drove.  Mollye brought herself to saying only a few words; directions around town to places she knew they might find James.  Jared found his patience with her growing thin, unreasonably so.  It never crossed his mind to apologize to her for being so short, though.  He merely shrugged his actions off as acceptable, as she her concern surpassed the limits of his tolerance and was bordering on suffocating.  He felt no guilt in not explaining this to her, as she had not brought up the notion that she may be offended.  It was his life that was in danger because of this situation, anyway, of what concern was she?

So they drove, in silence, Molly feeling isolated and fearful of this man she thought she knew, and Jared feeling concern solely for his own well-being.
Short chapter because the Samus is lazy and doesn't actually have the chapter finished yet. However, to show that im not a COMPLETE slacker, this is the longest chapter i have written so far, so it will probably be divided up into at least 2 more parts. An obvious continuation of the last chapter.

so there.

Enjoy!
