Chapter 3
Dreams

Mollye sat quietly the whole time Jared relayed his story.  She said nothing for what felt like an eternity after he was done.  An occasional lightning strike lit up the room, and the thunder that followed was the only sound that broke the silence.  Mollye could not muster the courage to speak.

“I think that Serek’s first target is James.  I made sure he would have some serious problems getting to me directly, but I forgot to consider James.  He is the only way Serek can get to me now.”

Mollye’s face grew pale.  “The dreams.  I’m so sorry, it’s all my fault.  James has been having these dreams for months now.  He sometimes tells me about them, but I know he has them more often than he lets on.  I try to help him get rid of the dreams.  I do.  I can’t though.  For some reason, everything that I try fails.  Every night, I lay awake, listening to him, wondering why I can’t help him.”  Her eyes locked with his, pleading.  “He tells me about the eyes in the dreams, they’re always the same.  I always assumed that, well, maybe it was some kind of premonition, so I told him to be weary of whoever it was in the dream.  I had no idea that it was you.”

“This is Serek’s doing.” Jared clenched his fist.  “As soon as he knew he was losing control of me…That’s when he started after James.  He knew that this would be the first place I’d try to go.  I can’t protect James if Serek already had gotten this far with him.”  Jared sighed.  “I can’t let him win.  Tell me about James’s dreams.  Maybe I’ll be able to figure out something.”

“I can’t.  James really doesn’t say much about them.  Every time he tires, his face just gets pale and he freezes.”  The lights in the house flickered as lightning struck near the house.  Mollye shuddered.  The thunder shook the house so bad the she couldn’t tell whether it was her shaking or the storm shaking her.  “I can’t stand to see him like that, James.  Please, do something to help him.”

“I have to, I couldn’t leave him… But I don’t know if he’ll let me help him.  He doesn’t trust me, and I don’t blame him.  Not after what they’re trying to do to him.”

“I know,” Mollye sighed.  “I could try to get him to trust you, but I could only do that- try.”  Mollye paused, trying to pull herself together.  She couldn’t.  She burst into tears.  “Why couldn’t I just be normal?  The man I love got kidnapped for 13 years, my only son is about to be lost… my life, everything changed- it’s all become so terribly hard.  Jared, I don’t think that I can handle this anymore.”

“You won’t have to, I will be there.  They can’t take me again.  I won’t let them.  I won’t let him harm James or you either. He can’t.  I’d kill him first.”
